The Great Outdoors: Ribble Valley

Founded by Ken Varey over 30 years ago and owned for more than a decade by Kevin Horkin, Ken Varey's Town & Country Wear remains in its hometown of Clitheroe to this day. Clitheroe is the centre of the glorious Ribble Valley, an area with a rich cultural heritage and undisputed outstanding natural beauty. In fact, it's the perfect place for a day out so if you're planning on a visit, here are some locations that you shouldn't miss...

Clitheroe Castle

A Scheduled Monument and Grade I Listed Building, Clitheroe Castle was built at some time during the 12th century. The castle's keep is the second-smallest extant stone keep in England and, along with an interactive museum, is free to visit. It's a long climb to the upper part of the structure but well worth it for the stunning panoramic views across the Ribble Valley.

Holmes Mill

Built in 1823, Holmes Textile Mill has been redeveloped into a stunning leisure venue with food & beer halls and its very own hotel for those who want to extend their visit. Though catering to thoroughly modern tastes, Holmes Mill has been tastefully decorated, with many original features kept in place to enhance the aesthetic.

Ribchester

Ribchester is a picturesque Roman village and is now home to the only specialist Roman museum in Lancashire. Built above the ruins of a Roman fort, the museum has been welcoming visitors since 1914 and is particularly noted for its spectacular re-enactments, which take place annually.
